David Ayer has been a cock tease on Twitter about Suicide Squad up until recently, but yesterday he dropped the first look of Jared Leto as The Joker. Comic book nerds (you know who you are, Mike) will recognize the image from the cover of the iconic graphic novel The Killing Joke (via SuperHeroHype):
Following the Suicide Squad cast image from last night, director David Ayer has debuted another photo on his Twitter account showing the previously-absent Jared Leto. Joker fans will instantly recognize the photo as an homage to the cover of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s classic story “The Killing Joke.” Check it out and compare it with the actual cover image below. Suicide Squad will also star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Plastique, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Ike Barinholtz, and Adam Beach. The film will hit theaters on August 5, 2016.
We’re not gonna do the Heath Ledger vs. Jared Leto thing are we, right? Let’s don’t. Because we didn’t the whole Jack Nicholson vs. Heath Ledger thing back in whatever year that was. That worked out well. Also, I want to point out that he’s playing a character that’s drawn with with colored pencils.
