People on the internet who are into watching two grown men punch each other are up in arms after last night’s controversial victory by Timothy Bradley over Manny Pacquiao. (Apparently, Manny punched better except the judges didn’t think so but they were obviously wrong? I don’t understand boxing.) Now it turns out the whole thing might have been fixed.
The Big Lead reports:
Are you ready for Manny Pacquiao – Timothy Bradley II? Timothy Bradley tweeted out this photo back on May 29th, 11 days before the fight that was so controversial that it demands a rematch. As you can tell from the poster, the match is set for November 10, and the tickets – hey, what do you know – are available right now. At this point, we should remind you that Bob Arum is the promoter for both Pacquiao and Bradley. If this had been scored a decisive victory for Pacquiao, there is no rematch or at least one that is desired by the public. Arum acted upset after the fight, saying he had it 10 rounds to 2 for Pacquiao. He also told Kevin Iole, “This is a death knell for boxing, and I’m going to make a ton of money on the rematch.”
Statistically and logistically boxing is the easiest sport to fix, and there is a lot of money to be made by the people in charge by agreeing to an outcome beforehand. So this is probably true? And it probably happens all the time? Maybe next time, instead of spending a ton of money to watch two grown men hit each other for a few minutes, you could go to any playground after school gets out. Or pay some homeless guys a couple bucks to fight. Really it’s the same thing, except you can still afford dinner.
