Cameron Diaz offended the entire country of Peru during her recent visit to the Inca city of Machu Picchu, where she was photographed wearing a green bag printed with a red star and the words “Serve the people”, the most famous slogan of the Chinese communist leader, Mao Tse-Tung. During the 80s and 90s, The Communist Party of Peru, better known as the the Maoist terrorist organization, Shining Path, led an insurgency that left more than 70,000 Peruvians dead. In a prepared statement, Diaz said:
I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended. The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it. I’m sorry for any people’s pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country’s history.”
Cameron Diaz is too stupid for me to give her credit for lying, so she probably didn’t know. Just like my hippie neighbors who wear their Che Guevara t-shirts because they think it’s cool. They always stop me outside to talk about the evil American empire, but that usually ends up with them asking me for a ride to the store and wondering if I know anyone who’s hiring.
